GIRLS ON THE RUN is Dorothy Rice Bennett’s second novel, following last year’s NORTH COAST A Contemporary Love Story. Jennifer and Stacy are young and both, for different reasons, on the run. Meeting at a truck stop, they form an unlikely alliance and cross the country together. Reaching a stopping place, they try to build lives—and to figure out what their relationship means and what to do about it. . . . In the middle of the night, 23-year old Jennifer Halston speeds west on I-70. A phone call had warned her to flee from Pittsburgh. Now she does not know what to do and just keeps driving her faded Chevy Nova—while her blue eyes search the rearview mirror with fear that she is being followed. At a truck stop in Ohio, Jennifer notices a young woman climbing down from a truck cab. Later she sees her again standing by the roadside with a thumb up. After hesitating a moment, Jen decides to offer her a ride. And thus she meets Stacy Stevens, a short, stocky ex-soldier with spiky hair and a duffle bag over her shoulder. Stacy, 26, angry and running from rejection by her family and the Army, is openly a lesbian. After Jennifer recovers from her initial shock, she realizes that Stacy is a decent person and that she doesn’t care about her being gay. Soon Stacy reassures Jen that the toughs pursuing her in Pittsburgh, after an altercation in a bar, are not likely to be chasing her now that she has left their turf. Jennifer gradually calms down but continues driving west. Stacy and Jennifer form a tentative alliance and forge a path across the United States. Jennifer has limited funds; Stacy knows how to camp, so they sleep under the stars. Brought up in a large farm family, Stacy exudes confidence; Jennifer, an only child whose parents died when she was a teenager, is fearful. Yet comfort gradually grows between them. Stacy finds the tall blonde very attractive but knows enough to keep hands off. She also wonders aloud if maybe their being on the run was not an accident but instead some kind of destiny. Reaching Stacy’s chosen destination, San Francisco, the two remain together to find housing and jobs. Trained as an Army mechanic, Stacy has an agenda—locate work and then explore ’Frisco’s famed gay community where she hopes to find fun, love, and ultimately a partner. Jen, having abruptly left behind her job, her friends, and her home, is at loose ends. Stacy encourages her to do what she’s always dreamed of doing, and Jennifer tries to figure out what that is. Always fond of writing, she decides to keep a journal and finds, surprisingly, that her thoughts and feelings often revolve around her mysterious friend Stacy. They are very different, but Stacy and Jennifer gradually become quite close—until Carrie Dozier arrives and turns their world upside down. A friend from Pittsburgh, Carrie now finds Jen living with a lesbian—something that makes Carrie very uncomfortable. After moving into their tiny apartment, she introduces Jennifer to eligible young men, thrusting her into a social world that Jen has always avoided. And sensing the tension among them, Stacy gets serious about exploring the local gay scene. Although good things happen for Stacy on the job and with her estranged family, her relationship with Jennifer seems to be on the skids—until Carrie’s constant pressure leads Jen to an emotional crisis. Jennifer suddenly learns more deeply who she real is and what she wants from life. . . .

GIRLS ON THE RUN edition by Dorothy Rice Bennett Romance eBooks Reviews

I really enjoyed the character development and the realistic course of their story. It was not predictable in the way so many such books are. There was a great sense of place in all of the various settings in which the women found themselves, especially the camping scenes for city girl Jennifer.
There is something in it for everyone to relate to and not once did I think the characters were too young for me (76) to relate to. A few scenes brought tears, more brought smiles. A great, easy read and not one to be missed. Glimpses of the author emerge in such things as what Jennifer prepares for picnics, her dress up clothes for Christmas, etc. Dorothy you are a great writer and looking forward to more from you.
Girls on the Run takes the reader on the trip with Jennifer and Stacy. Each girl has a story and each must face her dreams by visiting her past. What starts as companionship soon developers into a friendship and the struggles of facing the realities that seemingly challenge their different lives. Take this ride of discovery with Jennifer and Stacy and I am sure you will find a bit of yourself in the lives of the Girls on the Run.

As with the first novel by Dorothy Rice Bennett, North Coast, A Contemporary Love Story, the author provides vivid pictures in her style and an ease of language making the experience of her novels one of smoothness and warmth. Well worth your time.
This is my first time reading a novel from Dorothy Rice Bennett and I can say that it will not be my last. Dorothy did a wonderful job of crafting a complex story of two young ladies and detailing their development from being on the run across the United States to the life that they eventually setup for themselves in San Francisco. I loved the author's voice that she gave each of two leading characters plus other secondary characters in the novel. The author developed a wonderful story from one major life event for each character plus their day to day routines and activities. It was a compelling story about discovering who each character really is inside.
Dorothy Rice Bennett has published another lesbian romance novel that appeals not just to lesbians, but to anybody who has ever struggled with the question of who they are or who they are supposed to be.
Girls on the Run follows two protagonists through a natural and sweet progression of new love. The characters first build a solid relationship as friends who trust in each other and respect one another. Stacy portrays patience and understanding for a woman coming into her own even as her own family has abandoned her. And Jennifer shows tremendous restraint to work on her confusions and make herself whole before inviting anyone into her life. Bennett has created two solid women struggling through difficult adversities in their lives to emerge better people on the other side who are ready to give and receive love.
All readers, no matter your sexual preference, can learn lessons from Girls on the Run. Jennifer receives advice that "we are given all kinds of messages about what is right and wrong and what is expected of us. After a time, these judgements become our reality." Jennifer must learn, as we all do, that it is okay to become who we are, not who others expect us to be.
A beautiful relationship is formed as both women clearly learn who they are and families come to terms and extend their support for two people who are destined to be together.
Perhaps an overly impulsive reaction to perceived danger propels this story and its naïve young protagonist from the East Coast to San Francisco, thanks to the equally young, if somewhat more worldly, lesbian hitchhiker she picks up along the way. Both are starting over, with very little to their names. Will they make it in this new city where they know no one, and barely know each other?

I enjoyed how the two women gradually get acquainted, and manage to survive, finding work and lodging. It was inspiring to see how their circumstances improve as their perseverance and effort bring results; it’s a reminder that there is always a way forward and upward if one tries hard enough.

The main character shows equal determination to learn more about herself through counseling, coming to question her previous assumptions about who she is and what she wants in life. Her gradual acceptance of the idea that she, too, might be gay feels authentic, if inevitable.

There is similar authenticity in the way the relationship between the two women grows and changes. So many romances just jump from introduction to intimacy that it’s refreshing to follow a more realistic pace. It takes time for two people to discover if they’re right for each other, especially when they’re from such different backgrounds.

Everything in this story feels natural and relatable, whether the reader is straight or gay, older or younger. The way the pair build their new life, making new friends, healing old hurts, is thoroughly satisfying. Overall, an enjoyable book.
Dorothy Rice Bennett has done it again. Another really good read. Its about courage, creativity, and how the people in our lives affect who we are and who we become. This story breaks all the stereotypes for women and girls, and addresses the many ways other people and the universe supports us when we open ourselves to that kind of support. Things weren't easy for the characters in this story, but they have courage and tenacity and those are the things that support and move them forward. They didn't have to do it by theirselves but they had to trust theirselves and each other and stretch theirselves and when they do they find support in the people they need and their own courage and tenacity, and once again as in this author's books the support of the people they find around them. Another great story of love and courage,
